Scope Bases

A scope base is the foundation of your optic mount. It locks to the receiver and gives your rings a solid, repeatable surface, and a canted base adds elevation for longer shots. As an authorized dealer for Talley, Warne, Leupold, EGW and DIP, we carry one-piece and two-piece bases for the Remington 700, Tikka, Savage, Ruger, Howa and more.

Shooting a CZ Rimfire?

Most rimfires do not use a screw-on base. They use a dovetail. Our Pete's Pillars CZ 457 rails clamp the 11mm dovetail and give you a full-length Picatinny surface in 0, 15 and 30 MOA, so you can run the same rings you use on your centerfire.

Choosing a Scope Base

One-piece or two-piece

A one-piece base spans the receiver for a stiffer mount and more freedom in ring placement, which suits precision rifles and long scopes. Two-piece bases are lighter and leave the ejection port and loading area open, a common choice for hunting rifles.

Picatinny or Weaver

Picatinny bases use standardized slot widths and spacing. Weaver bases look similar but slot spacing can vary. Picatinny rings generally need a Picatinny base, while Weaver rings will usually fit both.

Flat or 20 MOA

A canted 20 MOA base builds in elevation for long range so your scope can reach farther before running out of adjustment. For hunting and shorter distances, a flat base keeps the scope centered in its travel.

Mount it right

Match the base to your action length and handedness, degrease the screws, follow the manufacturer's torque spec and thread locker guidance, and pair it with quality scope rings.

Scope Base FAQ

What is MOA?

MOA stands for minute of angle, a unit of angle equal to 1/60 of a degree. At 100 yards, 1 MOA covers about 1.047 inches, roughly an inch. At 200 yards it is about 2 inches, at 500 yards about 5 inches. Scope turrets, reticles and canted bases are all measured in MOA (or in MRAD, the metric alternative).

What does a canted MOA base do?

A canted base tilts the scope slightly nose-down, so the scope starts with built-in elevation. A 20 MOA base adds about 21 inches of elevation at 100 yards, which lets your scope reach farther before it runs out of turret travel.

How much MOA cant should I choose?

Most hunters and mid range shooters do well with a flat 0 MOA base. For long range, 15 to 30 MOA is the most common choice, with 20 MOA the standard. Extreme long range shooters sometimes run 40 or 50 MOA. Check your scope's total elevation travel and make sure you can still zero at 100 yards with the cant you choose.

MOA or MRAD?

Both measure angle. 1 MRAD equals about 3.44 MOA. Canted bases are usually listed in MOA, while many precision scopes use MRAD turrets. A 10 MRAD base adds about the same elevation as a 34 MOA base. You can mix a MOA base with a MRAD scope; the cant only shifts your starting point.

Do I need a 20 MOA base?

Only if you plan to shoot at long range and need more elevation than your scope offers on its own. For most hunting and mid range shooting, a flat base works well.

Will Weaver rings fit a Picatinny base?

Usually, yes. Picatinny rings may not fit a Weaver base because Weaver slots can be narrower. Check your ring and base specs before mounting.

How do I know which base fits my rifle?

Match the make, model, action length and handedness of your rifle. Receivers and screw patterns vary, even within one brand, so confirm fitment on the product page.

My rimfire has no screw holes. What do I use?

Most rimfires use a dovetail instead. Look at our dovetail to Picatinny rails, including Pete's Pillars rails for the CZ 457.
